What Stood Out

GRASS lands on Windows without the pain

Both Spatialists and the VerySpatial podcast flagged the same development: GRASS 8.5.0 can now be installed on Windows — and all other major platforms — via conda, with no manual setup required. This is a meaningfully larger story than a point release typically warrants. GRASS has long been the most capable open-source geospatial computing platform that most Windows-based practitioners have never actually used, in large part because its Windows setup historically ranged from tedious to genuinely broken. Conda-based installation removes that friction entirely. For a tool with GRASS's analytical depth, that's a real accessibility shift.

Why this matters: GRASS has always punched above its usage numbers because Windows setup was a barrier. Conda parity closes the gap between capability and adoption. Watch for GRASS to start appearing in more tutorial content from practitioners who previously worked around it.

FME Flow adds MCP support

Quietly noted in the VerySpatial episode 785 shownotes: FME Flow now integrates with the Model Context Protocol. Safe Software has been watching the MCP-for-GIS conversation carefully — they publicly asked in May whether FME gets replaced by AI coding agents, and this move reads as an answer: not replaced, integrated. MCP support in FME Flow means the most widely deployed spatial ETL infrastructure now has an agentic integration surface. The practical implication is that AI agents can be wired into FME workflows as a tool rather than positioned as an alternative to them.

Why this matters: MCP is becoming the default integration surface for agentic GIS tooling. FME's adoption signals this is no longer an experimental pattern — it's entering the mainstream tooling stack. The same week VertiGIS acquired 1Spatial adds further consolidation signal to the enterprise GIS infrastructure layer.
