Quiet Day Across the Feeds

Quiet day across the feeds. Only seven posts landed in the window, a weekend lull, and several of those were short video clips or map curation. Here are the highlights.

1. AI Safety's New Reality: The Governance Gap Is No Longer Theoretical — Thoughts & Insights — David G. Smith Smith argues that AI's most immediate problems aren't the distant existential scenarios that dominated the early safety debate. His case is that organizations are deploying AI systems faster than they can build the governance to oversee them, and he points to reporting across very different industries. It follows his earlier piece on doomerism and the marketing of importance, so the two read well together. → AI Safety's New Reality: The Governance Gap Is No Longer Theoretical

2. terrio v0.5.0 — Open Geospatial Solutions A new release video for terrio, the Rust geospatial toolkit the channel covered earlier in the week. Follow-on releases are a useful signal of whether a young project has momentum. The feed gives no description, so watch it before judging the changes. → terrio v0.5.0

3. RustGIS v0.4.0 demo — Open Geospatial Solutions A demo of the latest RustGIS release, the open-source Rust GIS that set off an argument among GIS professionals earlier in the week. Seeing the actual software run is more useful than the debate around it. As with the terrio video, the feed carries no description. → RustGIS v0.4.0 demo

4. weeklyOSM 848 — weeklyOSM The weekly OpenStreetMap roundup for October 15 to 21. It covers a proposed bot edit to strip redundant tags like wall=wall, a proposal to phase out amenity=hospital in favor of healthcare=hospital with voting set for November 5 to 19, and five new MapRoulette challenges from Ballerup Municipality covering all five Danish regions with nearly 90,000 tasks. → weeklyOSM 848

Also in the window: Mappery shared a Night Bus map of The Hague, and Trimble Geospatial posted two short videos, a 3D laser scanning clip at the Croatian National Theatre in Rijeka and a Smart target ST30 overview. Neither carries enough detail to summarize.
