GeoFeeds Daily Briefing — Sunday, November 1, 2026

Covering posts from 0800 ET October 31 to 0800 ET November 1. Sources: 168 geospatial feeds.

Quiet Day Across the Feeds

Quiet day across the feeds. Only nine posts landed in the window, a weekend lull, and several of those were vendor event promos or short curation. Here are the highlights.

1. Files in a bucket: CNG Zürich — Spatialists – geospatial news A recap of CNG Zürich, which was booked out. The phrase heard most often was "files in a bucket," and the post traces how far that idea carries, from PMTiles and Portolan to GeoZarr and GeoEmbeddings. It's a quick read on where the cloud-native crowd thinks the format work is heading. → Files in a bucket: CNG Zürich

2. The finding that shows up in nearly every ArcGIS security review — Spatial Source The answer is shared administrative accounts, which the authors say are among the most common findings and also among the most often deferred. They argue the fix is simpler than people assume, since shared accounts weaken attribution, accountability and least privilege. Rare practical security advice for ArcGIS administrators. → The finding that shows up in nearly every ArcGIS security review

3. weeklyOSM 849 — weeklyOSM The OpenStreetMap roundup for October 22 to 28. Andy Mabbett proposes a tagging scheme for the concrete arrows and illuminated beacon towers along the historic US Transcontinental Airway System, and another proposal separates the track of a flat ride or water ride from its ride area with new tags. Good for a look at how the community handles niche tagging. → weeklyOSM 849

4. RustGIS v0.5.0 demo — Open Geospatial Solutions A demo video for the latest release of RustGIS, which follows last week's v0.4.0 demo. Steady release cadence is a useful signal for a young project. The feed carries no description, so watch it before judging the changes. → RustGIS v0.5.0 demo

5. How to map GPS locations for grizzly bears in Denali National Park — ArcGIS Blog A hands-on ArcGIS Pro mapping walkthrough that looks tied to the 30DayMapChallenge, which starts today with the points theme. The feed gives no summary, so the title and image are the only clues. Animal tracking is a concrete applied use case. → How to map GPS locations for grizzly bears in Denali National Park

Also in the window: Spatial Source ran two CHCNAV promos ahead of Locate26, one on the ViLi i100 visual-LiDAR GNSS RTK receiver and one on its land, air and water lineup. Earth Observation News noted local press coverage of Stefan Dech receiving the Bavarian State Medal for Outstanding Services to the Environment, and Mappery shared a photo of a York Observatory sign.
